Poverty in Romania is a widely studied and debated phenomenon at all levels, starting from families to the parliament everybody is talking about poverty at the market, queuing at the cashier and while traveling. Lot of scientific research is done on the problem and poverty level is frequently redefined.
For the Romanian Maltese Relief Service poverty is not a topic to discuss. It is a field of work where we wish to help practically, to improve the quality of life of those people who are mostly in need.

Main principles of giving aid at SAMR are the following:

We regularly help – as far as possible we try to follow the consolidation of the situation of those who receive aid. The aim is to contribute to the growth of the standard of living in a sustainable way.

We help groups of people in need – the aid is not meant to support only one person, but they are given within a program that focuses on a group of people

Material aid – we do not grant financial support. Experience has shown us that material aid can be better monitored and has predictable effect; investments are carried out where they are needed.

Implication – we wish to imply the beneficiaries of the aids in other activities in order to have a long-term impact. Many people assisted by us become SAMR volunteers this way.
