In Romania, the Maltese Relief Service supported the activity of a few hospitals, got directly implied in organizing and coordinating the activities of some medical centers, surgeries and clinics, as well as of some medico-social and humanitarian programs. At the moment, many medical assistance programs for people in need are running: surgeries, home medical assistance, homes offering medical assistance and pharmacies. This way we wish to offer sick people in need a free specialized support in order to alleviate their sufferings caused by poverty and sickness. Our medical services join the social ones to make them complete. In order to be able to offer a complete support, we not only wish to relieve social isolation and financial difficulties but also the whole suffering, including the physical one. The familiar, trusty relationship which lies between the volunteers implied in medical services and the patients plays a major part in the healing process. Many of our beneficiaries live by their own; have no family to support them in their everyday life, in fighting disease and to accompany them to medical visits. They are extremely vulnerable by the impersonal atmosphere and the absence of interest in hospitals. We wish, through our medical services, to offer them not only specialized help but also understanding and power for getting better.
Under SAMR protection a series of specific medical projects are running on different locations in the country, such as: Timişoara (surgery, pharmacy, home medical assistance), Dorobanţi (surgery, home medical care), Arad (dental office – 474 pacients in 2007), Sibiu (pharmacy – 312 beneficiaries in 2007), Găeşti (surgery, injection service, psychological counseling) and Târgovişte (surgery).
