The Romanian Association and the Embassy of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta were founded in Bucharest in 1933. Today the Order is represented by the Ambassador of the Order of Malta , Franz Alfred Reichsgraf von Hartig (accredited on 13 May 1997) and by the Hospitaller of the Order in Romania, Count Tibor Kálnoky. The Romanian Association is the only one worldwide that also includes an Orthodox section accredited by the Government of the Order as `Supporting Members`. This unique privilege was given by Pope John Paul II and Grand Master Fra` Andrew Bertie when they visited Romania. They were fascinated by the cooperation of the ecumenical work groups within the Order and the Relief Service, and also by the development of ecumenism in the Christian Romania.
The activities carried out by the Order in the last 10 years focused on finding financial resources to support SAMR projects, and also on attracting the attention of the authorities and the public to the work, efforts and dedication of those who work for SAMR.
